The following
educational quiz is a part of the continuing program
of the Masonic Education Committee of the Grand Lodge
to provide a monthly educational program for lodge use.
The leader simply reads the questions and lets various
members provide answers until all the points are covered.
CARDINAL: Of fundamental importance. Chief, Main, Prime,
principal. The four cardinal virtues are of fundamental
importance in man's search for self improvement.
TOKEN: You all know the Masonic explanation from the
EAo. The word "token" is an "act"
not a "thing." A 'word' is a thing.
VICISSITUDE: A change in fortune or situation, especially
when for the worse.
VOUCH: To bear witness for one. To vouch for one in
the opening ceremonies is to state unequivocally that
you have sat in a lodge of Master Masons with him or
that he has been duly tried and/or strictly examined
by you. It does not mean that someone has casually referred
to him as a Mason.
TEMPLE: This word gets us a lot of criticism from religious
circles as they believe it pertains only to worship
of God. Three different dictionaries supported their
understanding. Freemasonry, based on its connection
with King Solomon's Temple, and the symbolism we use
from that Temple, refer to their building as a Temple
rather than a Lodge Building. It does not mean we think
of it as a church.
STEWARD: An officer in charge of stores and arrangements
about meals. In Masonry a steward is informed at his
installation that he is to assist the S.D and other
officers; to assist in collection of dues; and to make
all arrangements for the convenience of the brethren
when assembled. Other words with similar meanings are
Caterer, waiter, agent and provider.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN IMPLEMENT AND AN INSTRUMENT?
IMPLEMENT: As a noun it means a device, a tool gadget
or utensil. The working tools are referred to as implements.
A tool is anything held in the hands and used to assist
in doing manual work. As a verb it means to carry into
effect. By using this quiz as an implement the Master
carriedin to effect an educational program.
INSTRUMENT: Agent, means, tool, vehicle, an implement
or a device. An implement is a thing serving as an instrument.
The Working Tools are referred to as Implements. A sharp
object (Pressing ....) is referred to as an instrument.
We might say a spade is an implement. A pencil is an
instrument.
DUE FORM: That which is owing or ought to be done. Due
form is the form in which an act ought to be done to
be done correctly. Ample Form: Any action of the Gr.
Master is considered ample. When done by a deputy it
is considered due form and when done by any other officer
it is "in form". Technically, when this lodge
is opened/closed by the WM, or SW or JW acting in his
stead, it is closed in due form(He is the one authorized
to do it.), when closed by someone else(A Past Master
for example) it is in form.
