The following
educational quiz is a part of the continuing program
of the Masonic Education Committee of the Grand Lodge
to provide a monthly educational program for lodge use.
The leader simply reads the questions and lets various
members provide answers until all the points are covered.
1. WHEN MUST THE BALLOT BOX BE USED?
(a) On Petitions for degrees.
(b) On petition for affiliation.
(c) On petition for advancement. HBML P 71
2. WHAT IS THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF WHITE BALLS AND BLACK
CUBES REQUIRED IN THE BALLOT BOX?
(A) 24 white & 7 black (HBML means LA Handbook
of Masonic Law)

3. OTHER THAN ON PETITIONS, WHEN IS A UNANIMOUS VOTE
REQUIRED?
Before a lodge may contribute to any organization
other than Gr. Lodge, Gr. M's projects, District Lodge
or Demolay & then only after due notice has been

4. MAY A PETITION FOR PLURAL MEMBERSHIP BE RECEIVED
AT A CALLED MEETING?
No! All petitions must be received at stated meetings
only. HBML P 35
5. MAY A PERSON LIVING IN NEW ORLEANS PETITION A LODGE
IN SHREVEPORT?
Yes! A permanent resident of LA may petition any
lodge in Lousisiana. HBML P 34
6. MAY ANY MEMBER OF A LODGE BE REQUIRED TO CAST A BLACK
CUBE?
Yes! In the event of an unfavorable committee report
on a petition the Master is required to cast a black
cube. HBML P 98
7. IF NINE MEMBERS OF THE LODGE ARE PRESENT WHEN A BALLOT
IS CAST, WHAT IS THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF BALLOTS REQUIRED.
Nine. All members present must vote. One may not
abstain on a ballot. HBML P 31
8. WHAT PERCENTAGE OF VOTE IS REQUIRED FOR:
(A) Reinstatement after NPD: 2/3
(b) Indefinite suspension; 2/3
(c) Expulsion; 3/4
B & C must then be approved by G/L HBML P 105
9. IF 14 MEMBERS ARE PRESENT, HOW MANY VOTES ARE REQUIRED
FOR A 2/3 PERCENTAGE?
(14 ÷ 3 x 2 = 9.33) 10 votes "for"
are required. Nine votes would not constitute 2/3s.
The number of votes "for" must be twice
as many as there are "no" votes.
10. IF THE LODGE HAS TWO PETITIONS, MAY BOTH BE BALLOTED
ON AS ONE BALLOT?
NO!
A collective ballot is not permissible in Louisiana
